Architecture, Learning Sequences and Instructional Materials for 2DArt portfolio course

In a Dimensional Design course, high school students explore design thinking process, develop artistic expressive techniques/digital media practices, and create a creative portfolio.

Tools Used: Miro, Google Sites, Articulate Storyline, Adobe XD, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

Learners

High school students responded diagnostic survey and were observed during the diagnostic assessment. Students’ expectations and satisfaction were evaluated during the progression of the course and after each unit.

Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Employ the elements of art and principles of design in the artistic process to be able to recognize them and manipulate them in their own artwork.

  • Use artistic and design tools to organize, develop, and deliver creative ideas with simple sketches.

  • Create meaningful art through observational drawing (pencil, charcoal) and express feelings with texture, light and color (watercolor, painting.)

  • Effectively express their artistic ideas when participating in a school-wide art exhibit and demonstrate basic presentation skills.

  • Confidently participate in discussion and critique about major artworks as well as their own

Data Analisys

The course architecture is meticulously crafted, drawing inspiration from established learning standards and enriched by insights from a diagnostic survey, which delves into the students' data. I evaluate their confidence levels in utilizing a diverse range of hands-on and digital techniques, aligning these assessments with the expected outcomes of the course. Additionally, I conduct diagnostic exercises to thoroughly assess their existing skills and prior experiences, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of their capabilities and learning needs.

Bar chart titled 'What skills do you feel MORE confident to perform as an artist? (choose three)'. It displays responses from 58 participants with categories such as drawing, mixed-media collage, photography, painting, and others. The longest bar represents photography, indicating the highest confidence, followed by mixed-media collage and painting.

Course Achitecture

I leverage the Miro platform to intricately map the interconnections among course objectives, students' interests, and the diverse array of expressive tools, both digital and hands-on. Through this process, I've formulated eight cohesive units that embody the synthesis of these elements, all encapsulated within the overarching framework of the design thinking model.

Instructional Materials

I devised three pivotal supportive instructional materials: comprehensive web page guidelines, detailed checklists tailored for complex projects, and a strategic timeline delineating key milestones for each unit and fostering collaboration. These tools serve as invaluable resources, aiding students in navigating their coursework, especially during extended absences from the classroom or while working remotely on assigned tasks.

Evaluation Tools

  • Evidence-based projects supported with checklists (instead of Rubrics) as Summative assessments.
